Understanding "Coupon Match Ups"
The real secret to couponing is matching up your coupons with your stores sale prices to get the lowest possible price. Once you start really paying attention to what you buy and what the regular price for it is you will start to notice when items are at their lowest price. So when those items are at their low price, you use a coupon on top of that low price and you've got yourself a great deal! So basically, when you see a "coupon matchup" on a blog it's just showing you what is on sale that week and what coupons you can use on it.
So, before I start posting any coupon matchups I wanted to explain how to read them.
Here are a few examples:
#1: This is the easiest to figure out:
Hungry Jack Pancake Mix, $1.98
$0.55/1 Hungry Jack Mix printable
$1.43 ea. after coupon!
The bold print is telling you what the item is. "Hungry Jack Pancake Mix" and then lists the price of the item. The next line is a link to a coupon for that item. It reads $0.55/1 (fifty five cents off one) Hungry Jack Mix printable, so you know if you click that link it will lead you to a coupon that you can print off and use. When you use the coupon it will make the pancake mix only $1.43 each. Simple right?
#2: Same as before, but with TWO links:
Wheat Thin Stix, $2.98
$1/1 Wheat Thins Crunch Stix printable
$1/1 Wheat Thins Crunch Stix printable
$1.98 ea. after coupon!
Same as last time. Bold=product name+price. $1/1=One dollar off one item. There are two links listed because this coupon is available in more than one place. You can follow each link and get 2 prints from each one. So if you did that you could have 4 coupons for Wheat Thin Stix!
#3: Referencing coupons from the paper
Lawry’s Seasoning, $1.64

Obviously by now you know what the bolded print means. Now, on to the next line: " $0.50/1 Lawrys Spice Blend" You know that means fifty cents off one Lawrys Spice Blend...but what about that stuff that is written next? "exp. 5-15-11" = the expiration date listed on the coupon. This can be confusing to new couponers: (RP 04/17/11) =You will always see 2 letters like this. It could be "RP", "SS", or "PG". Here is what that means:
RP= Red Plum
SS= Smart Source
PG= Proctor & Gamble
These are newspaper inserts, obviously the ones that the coupons are in. So putting "RP" in the coupon matchup will tell you which newspaper insert the coupon can be found in. You'll notice in my example above there is also a date listed after, that lets you know what day the paper came out. So looking at this example:
RP 04/17/11
You can know that the coupon that is referenced in the matchup was in the Redplum insert from the April 17th paper. This is helpful for those that do not clip their coupons but instead leave the inserts whole and organized by date.
There's one more example I would like to share now that you know the basics of reading a coupon matchup:

$1/2 Rice Krispies printable
$1/3 Select Kellogg’s Cereal printable

Buying coupons from coupon clipping services
Buying coupons from a coupon clipping service is a great way to get coupons. Many people I have told this to just don't understand WHY you would pay money for coupons when you are trying to *SAVE* money. Here is why I choose to buy from coupon clipping services:
A lot of times certain coupons will come out for something that my family uses a lot of. I only buy 2-4 papers so I can only have a couple of those coupons....but my goal is to stock up on those items. (Enough to last 3-6 months or longer if it is something that won't go bad.) So, I can get on my favorite coupon clipping site CouponsThingsbyDeDe.com and order as many of those coupons as I want. Depending on the coupon prices vary from $0.08 to $0.50 each. The $0.50 coupons are usually so high because with that coupon you can get the item for free. So, you pay pennies for coupons and get great savings!
Here is an example: Recently a coupon for $1/1 McCormick Spice, Herb, Extract or food coloring came out. Their Taco Seasoning is only $0.52 at Walmart therefore with the $1/1 coupon I got it for free PLUS got overage! I bought Taco Seasoning 20 packets at a time and actually made $10 and got the product for free. So, even after I deducted what I paid for the coupons I still came out ahead. Make sense?

#1 & #2: $3/1 Nivea body wash (one is for men, one is for women)
•Nivea bodywash is only $3 at Walmart right now, making it FREE. You can also score it for $0.79 at Walgreens.
#3: $1/1 Wheat thins Stix
• These are sooo yummy. One of my favorite snacks! They also go on sale for $1.69 at Food Pyramid making them only $0.69/box! At Walmart they're usually $2.50/box. I have heard Targets sale price is $2.00/box but since we don't have a Target nearby I cannot confirm that.
My Walgreens Trip-April 17, 2011
I had my first really bad experience at my Walgreens this morning. Basically, the cashier refused to do more than one transaction for me and told me that doing any more would be committing coupon fraud. (Which is not true, btw) So I got my first transaction and had to leave. After I calmed down my husband, Josh offered to go back up there and finish getting what I needed. I compiled all that I could into one transaction, gave him a list and my coupons and sent him off. Here's what I got:

Where I Shop
Unfortunately, around here we have a very small selection of grocery stores. (And only a few that double coupons-most being 45+ miles away.) So this leaves me with only 3 places to shop.
#1: Walmart
: : : Ugh, yes, Walmart. Couponing is hard at Walmart when compared to stores like Kroger or Homeland that double coupons and have Catalina machines. You won't get "Extreme Couponing" results at Walmart but you can still save a good chunk of money! The best thing about shopping at Walmart is they are one of the few stores that allow overage. (Meaning, if you have a coupon for $3 and the item is only $2 you can get that $1 applied to the rest of your items, or if you have no other items you can get it back in cash. Just have to pay tax. I certainly try to use as many overage producing items I can to lower my grocery bill.
#2: Food Pyramid
: : : Most of their stuff is overpriced when comparing to Walmart but their sale prices are definetly better than Walmart. The best part? They double coupons up to $0.50. That means, if you have a coupon that is fifty cents or less in value the register automatically doubles it. A $0.50 coupon becomes a $1 coupon. I would not suggest getting all your groceries here...just things that you know will be a great deal after your coupon doubles.
#3: Walgreens
: : : This is where I get most of my health/beauty products. Their prices are also very high, unless it's something advertised in their weekly circular. The great thing about Walgreens is their Register Rewards program. It is a bit tricky though. I'll explain best as I can. Certain items each week trigger Regiser Rewards (RR) (you can check their weekly ad to see which items are producing RR) Here's an example of an upcoming RR deal: Buy 1 Goody Ouchless hair item for $3 and receive a $3 RR. So you will pay $3+tax for the item, but a $3 RR will print off with your receipt for you to use on your next purchase. Here's an example of "rolling" register rewards: You just bought the goody deal and you now have a $3 RR to spend on your next purchase, you could do this deal: Buy 2 Colgate Total Advance toothpastes for $3 each, and get a $4 RR. A couple weeks ago there was a coupon for $1.50 off Colgate Total advance. Since you're buying 2 products you can use 2 coupons. Making your cost only $3 for both toothpastes. You could then use the RR you got from the goody deal on the toothpaste deal to make your total out of pocket (oop) $0 (just pay tax!) Does that make sense?
Here are a few more things you'll need to know about Walgreens Register Rewards:
-You cannot have more coupons than items. In the Colgate scenario I just showed you, you would actually need to add what we call a "filler" item. (Which is just the cheapest thing in the store you can find. I personally use laffy taffy because it's only .15) So, basically, you cannot have 4 items and 5 coupons, or 2 items and 4 coupons, etc.
-There are restrictions. You cannot use register rewards to buy things like tobacco, alcohol, or dairy. You can find a complete list HERE.
-RR cannot exceed the price of the item(s) you are using them on and they will not cover tax.
-Customers redeeming a Register Reward against the same offer may not receive another RR. (Example: If you do the Goody deal, and get your $3 RR if you try to do the same deal and use the RR to pay you will NOT get another RR back. You will need to switch between deals if you want to do more than one.

Here's an example of "rolling" register rewards: You just bought the goody deal and you now have a $3 RR to spend on your next purchase, you could do this deal: Buy 2 Colgate Total Advance toothpastes for $3 each, and get a $4 RR. A couple weeks ago there was a coupon for $1.50 off Colgate Total advance. Since you're buying 2 products you can use 2 coupons. Making your cost only $3 for both toothpastes. You could then use the RR you got from the goody deal on the toothpaste deal to make your total out of pocket (oop) $0 (just pay tax!) Does that make sense?
Here are a few more things you'll need to know about Walgreens Register Rewards:
-You cannot have more coupons than items. In the Colgate scenario I just showed you, you would actually need to add what we call a "filler" item. (Which is just the cheapest thing in the store you can find. I personally use laffy taffy because it's only .15) So, basically, you cannot have 4 items and 5 coupons, or 2 items and 4 coupons, etc.
-There are restrictions. You cannot use register rewards to buy things like tobacco, alcohol, or dairy. You can find a complete list HERE.
-RR cannot exceed the price of the item(s) you are using them on and they will not cover tax.
-Customers redeeming a Register Reward against the same offer may not receive another RR. (Example: If you do the Goody deal, and get your $3 RR if you try to do the same deal and use the RR to pay you will NOT get another RR back. You will need to switch between deals if you want to do more than one.

A few beginner tips...
These are just a few of my own tips that I have found to be extremely useful in couponing. Everything listed here is what I did when I started couponing. Everyone has their own 'way' of starting out and of doing things so my tips may differ from other couponing blogs. :)
#1: Meal Plan
: : : Plan out your meals, from breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. I grocery shop every week so usually on Wednesday (when the new Walmart ad comes out) I start planning my meals. I base my meals off what is on sale and what I have coupons for. The first thing I do is check to see what is on sale that week, then I look at my coupons and match them up to the sale prices. Meal planning will make sure you buy exactly what you need. No more and no less. Don't worry about stockpiling right off the bat.
#2: Start Collecting Coupons
: : : There are several ways to get coupons. I think the most obvious would be to buy a Sunday paper. (I personally buy the Stillwater paper because the OKC & Tulsa papers never give me all the inserts.) This may sound crazy, but when I buy a paper I clip ALL the coupons. Yes, all of them and I save all of them. Of course there are lots of coupons in there for things I won't use, or things I wouldn't normally buy because of cost, BUT, you never know when you will find that item on clearance or on sale and be able to get it at a price you would pay for it, or for free. If it's not an item you would normally use you can donate it! You can also find printable coupons online. Don't have a printer? Many coupons offered on facebook by bricks.coupons.com you can have mailed to you! Neat, huh? Another way to get coupons is by ordering them from coupon clipping services. You pay for their time to clip and sort the coupons. This is especially handy when there is a coupon you want multiples of but don't want to buy a ton of papers.
#3: Organize Your Coupons
: : : Find a way to organize your coupons. A couple ideas would be a coupon organizer or a coupon binder. I use a binder with baseball card organizers. It may be bulky but I love it, I can see every single coupon I have without flipping through each individual coupon. I organize my coupons by type: Food, Household, Health & Beauty. Each of those categories has sub-categories (frozen foods, cereal, laundry, lotions, make up, etc.) It makes it really easy to find the coupon I need.
Once you start meal planning, collecting & organizing your coupons you should be ready to start. Here are a few more general tips:
•Always read each coupon you plan on using and follow the manufacturers instructions for use and check the expiration date. Misusing a coupon on purpose is coupon fraud. (Confused by the wording on one of your coupons? I'll have a post on that soon!)
•Know your stores coupon policy & carry a copy with you when you go shopping. You would be surprised how many cashiers or managers don't even know their own stores coupon policy!
•Get over your brand loyalty. You won't have as much success if you are only willing to buy certain brands. Don't be afraid to try new things. You don't have to give up everything, I understand some things just can't be replaced by another brand because nothing even comes close. It's okay to be that way on a few items...but if you refuse to try new brands you're not going to get far in the coupon world. Just my observation.
•One of my favorite quotes by an Extreme Couponer is "buy what you need, when you don't need it" This is how you stockpile. Example: We will always have a use for deodorant, so if I can get it for free, or really cheap I am going to stock up. Even if we already have a couple sticks of deodorant at home it is still something we need and use so we buy it at it's rock bottom price, that way we don't run out (when it's *not* on sale) and be forced to pay full price.
